CANADA

Canada is a world-class destination for international students.

Why study in Canada

Canada's education system is undeniably top-tier and highly respected worldwide. Earning a degree from a Canadian university is more than just an accomplishment—it's a symbol of quality and credibility.

Many Canadian universities rank among the top 100 globally, providing students with access to cutting-edge knowledge and technology. Moreover, the education system in Canada goes beyond traditional academics. It encourages students to develop essential skills such as critical thinking, teamwork, and effective communication—skills that are vital for success in both personal life and professional careers.

Lower tuition fees

In addition to its high-quality education, one of the major advantages of studying in Canada is its affordability. Compared to other popular study destinations such as the USA, the UK, or Australia, Canada generally offers lower tuition fees, particularly for postgraduate programs.

Moreover, there are numerous scholarships, bursaries, and financial aid opportunities available, which help ease the financial burden for international students. This combination of affordability and excellence makes Canada an appealing choice for those seeking a high-value education at a reasonable cost.

Welcoming and multicultural

Another reason to consider studying in Canada is its welcoming and inclusive environment. As one of the earliest countries to formally embrace multiculturalism in 1971, Canada has led the way in creating a society where everyone feels respected and encouraged to celebrate their heritage.

This dedication to multiculturalism is reflected in the numerous events and festivals that highlight Canada’s cultural diversity. From celebrations of Indigenous cultures and the vibrant Diwali Festival to the lively Oktoberfest and Asian Heritage Month, Canada actively embraces a wide variety of traditions. These festivities provide opportunities for everyone to learn about and connect with the different cultures represented across the country.

Exploration Journeys

Outside the classroom, Canada offers a wealth of natural beauty waiting to be explored. The country is home to some of the world’s most breathtaking natural landmarks, including the awe-inspiring Rocky Mountains, the powerful Niagara Falls, and the lush rainforests of British Columbia.

For those who prefer staying closer to urban areas, Canada’s local parks, beaches, hiking trails, ski resorts, and vibrant city centers provide countless options for leisure and adventure. Studying in Canada isn’t just about academics—it’s also about embracing an exciting lifestyle and creating lasting memories through incredible experiences.

Canada study permit: eligibility requirements

In order to be eligible for a Canada study permit, prospective students must:

  • obtain a letter of acceptance from a DLI;
  • prove enough funds to cover the first year of tuition, as well as living expenses and return transportation;
  • satisfy Canadian immigration authorities that they will leave Canada at the end of the period authorized by the study permit; and
  • be admissible to Canada (police background checks and/or a medical may be requested).

There may be additional requirements, depending on the applicant’s circumstances, including submitting a Statement of Purpose. A Statement of Purpose is required for some study permit applicants (check your IRCC checklist for your country), but it is recommended that you submit one even if it is not mandatory.

What documents do you need to apply to Canada’s Student Direct Stream?

You must include the following documents with your SDS study permit application:

  • a copy of your acceptance letter from a designated learning institution,
  • a copy of your provincial attestation letter, unless you’re exempt.
  • a copy of your upfront medical exam confirmation document,
  • proof that you have a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) of at least $20,635,
  • most recent secondary or post-secondary educational transcripts,
  • proof that you’ve paid the tuition fees for your first year of study, and
  • valid language test results demonstrating the required level of English or French.

A major requirement to apply for your study permit through the Study Direct Stream is submitting a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) showing you have an investment account with a balance of CAD $20,635 or higher.

Your GIC account is an investment. You will get the money back from your GIC once you start your studies in Canada. Usually, students receive an initial payment of $6,190.50 when they first arrive in Canada, then the remaining $14,444.50 is invested and paid out in instalments, with interest.

Minimum funds to Study in Canada

Canadian study permit applicants must prove they can support themselves and accompanying family members, if applicable, while in Canada.

Proof of funds for a study permit can be proven with:

  • proof of a Canadian bank account in your name, if you have transferred money to Canada;
  • Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) from a participating Canadian financial institution;
  • proof of a student/education loan from a bank;
  • bank statements for the past four months;
  • a bank draft that can be converted to Canadian dollars;
  • proof you paid tuition and housing fees;
  • a letter from the person or school giving you money; and/or
  • proof of funding paid from within Canada, if you have a scholarship or are in a Canadian-funded educational program.
  • Language tests to study in Canada

    Much like the way different universities and colleges in Canada have slightly different policies regarding who may prove English ability without having to sit a test, prospective students who do have to sit a test should note that different institutions may accept different tests.

    However, the same core group of tests are widely regarded as being acceptable proof of English language ability to study in Canada. Let’s take a look at these tests, and what scores you might need in order to satisfy a Canadian university or college that you have the right level of English to study in Canada.

    Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) assessment

    The CAEL computer edition (CAEL-CE) assessment provides a truly authentic representation of language use in a Canadian academic context. The minimum score required is typically an overall score of 70 or better and no part below 60. The CAEL-CE assessment is offered throughout Canada, China, India, the Philippines, UAE, and the United States.

    International English Language Testing System (IELTS) – Academic

    The minimum score required is an overall band of 6.5, with no band below 6.0.

    Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

    With the paper-based TOEFL no longer available, the online version remains an option. This is known as the internet-based TOEFL (iBT). You’ll typically need an overall score of at least 90, or even higher for some institutions, and you may have to score at least 20-25 for certain abilities.

    Pearson Test of English (PTE) – Academic

    A minimum score of at least 60 to 65 is typically required, depending on the institution.

    It’s possible that not all of the above tests may be accepted by every university or college, and/or that other tests may be accepted. Check with the institution you plan on applying to attend before booking your test date.

  • How long are language tests for Study Permits valid for?

    In most cases, language tests are valid for 24 months. Expired language results will not be accepted.

  • What is the Provincial Attestation Letter?

    To address Canada’s housing crisis and some other issues in Canada’s international student program, Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) introduced an additional document requirement for study permit applicants: The Provincial Attestation Letter. This document requirement is in response to the international student cap introduced in Canada in January 2024.

    Each province will need to issue the PAL to study permit applicants. It will show that the study permit application has been allocated within the national cap on international students that was implemented in January 2024. Basically, it’s a letter from the province showing that it has not exceeded the number of students it is allowed to accept that year.

    Study permit applicants who are not exempt and who do not provide a PAL with their submission will have their application returned, along with your fees.

  • Who Doesn’t Need A Provincial Attestation Letter?

    The following categories of international students are exempt from the Provincial Attestation Letter requirement:

    • Preschool, elementary, and secondary school students.
    • Master’s and PhD students.
    • Students applying for a study permit extension.
    • Visiting or exchange students.
    • Temporary residents completing a course or program of study that is a prerequisite to you enrolling at a DLI (such as language courses).
    • Individuals in Canada under a removal order.
    • Individuals holding a temporary resident permit with at least 6 months remaining.
    • Individuals who are the family member of a foreign national who lives in Canada and is a study permit holder, work permit holder, temporary resident with a permit valid for at least 6 months, a member of armed forces in another country under the Visiting Forces Act, an accredited foreign government representative, participants in certain sports activities or events, a worker in Canada who is a member of a foreign news company, or a religious worker.
    • Does the Provincial Attestation Letter Expire?

    Yes, each Provincial Attestation Letter comes with an expiry date. Unless it is otherwise stated on the PAL you receive from your school, the expiry date for PALS issued in 2024 is January 21, 2025.
